How is Strength of Schedule calculated?

Strength of Schedule is a measure of which teams have most difficult schedule in the league.

The Strength of Schedule “by Opp Record” value is calculated by adding up all wins and losses of all the opponents on a team's entire schedule, including future opponents.  Strength of Schedule “by Opp Pts” is calculated by adding up all of the points scored by all the opponents on a team's entrie schedule, including future opponents.

Here is an example of the SOS calculation for a fictitious “Team A” using a simple 4 game schedule with only 3 weeks of competition played so far:

Team A opponents:

  • Game 1:  Team B ( 3 wins - 0 losses, 200 pts)
  • Game 2:  Team C ( 2 wins - 1 losses, 187 pts)
  • Game 3:  Team D ( 1 wins - 2 losses, 146 pts)
  • Game 4:  Team B ( 3 wins - 0 losses, 200 pts)

Team A SOS:

  • by Opp Record Wins = 3 + 2 + 1 + 3 = 9
  • by Opp Record Losses = 0 + 1 + 2 + 0 = 3
  • by Opp Pts = 200 + 187 + 146 + 200 = 733
